Gage Park District in Chicago

Gage Park District in Chicago

 History (taken from C.P.District website)

When prominent businessman, attorney, and South Park Commissioner George W. Gage (--1875) died in office in 1875, his fellow board members decided to name a newly-developing park in his honor. In 1873, the commission had begun acquiring land for an elegant green square at the intersection of Western Avenue and what is now known as Garfield Boulevard. This property occupied a prominent location at the turning-point of the South Park Commission's boulevard system. Despite this, little had been done to complete Gage Park by the late 1890s. Frustrated by the park's unfinished condition, surrounding residents repeatedly asked for improvements. Finally, in 1903, the commission added ball fields, tennis courts, a wading pool, and a beautiful sunken garden with a formal reflecting pool and colonnade. In 1918, several small land purchases were made to extend the park's southern boundary. The following year, the commission constructed a swimming pool, separate men's and women's outdoor gymnasiums, and a children's playground in this area.

Crater lake

Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the United States. Crater Lake is in southern Oregon. Crater Lake is almost 2,000 feet at it's lowest point. Crater Lake appeared after a huge volcano erupted almost 6,000 years ago. The sides of the volcano's cone were cracked. The rain and melting snow created a lake. The water is so clean that it is  purer than most drinking water. You can find a beautiful picture of Wizard Island at http://www.allkindsofhistory.com/

Sequoia National Park

Sequoia National Park is the home of the largest living things on earth. The seeds fell on the ground in part of Califonia over 2,000 years ago. The seed grew into giant sequoia trees.  General Sherman was the name given to the biggest tree.  The trunk of general Sherman was 272 feet high.  The bark helps to protect the tree froms insects, disease, and fire.  The hollow trunks of fallen trees are large enough for a car to pass through them.  The general Sherman tree, located in Sequoia National park is the largest living thing on earth.

If I had a robot

This morning I read a magazine article about space robots.  It talked about space robots working outside the international space station.
It also talked about a humanoid robot named or called R2.

If I had a robot , he would have mechanical arms. He could use his arms to help me clean my room.

If I had a robot, I would use it to connect two electrical wires to give us more power for our house.

If Miss Graham had a robot, she would program it to help her take care of her garden.  She would have it pull up weeds and delicious vegetables.

Energy Conservation

Energy conservation means being careful about how much energy you use and trying to use less energy.

You want to use a car with high fuel efficiency so you can travel farther using less fuel.

You can recycle plastic, glass, paper, and metal.

Two ways that you can help conserve energy at home are to turn off the lights when you leave a room and unplug small appliances and machines when you will be away for a long time.

Paul Bunyan

Paul Bunyan was a legendary American character. He was the hero of a series of popular "tall tales." He was a giant lumberjack who had an enormous ox, called Babe the Blue Ox. Paul Bunyan, in addition to his incredible size, was supposed to have had tremendous strength, cunning, and courage. Paul was supposed to have been the biggest baby ever born in Maine. After growing up, Paul traveled west, and he and Babe cut and cleared forests across the USA. Babe and Paul both loved flapjacks (pancakes) with maple syrup.

Planting a fruit and veggie garden

My first garden

  • They need sunshine to grow the best.
  • Sunshine will give you the best vegetables and flowers.
  • Plants need good sunlight. This is called exposure. Try to watch how the sun shines down on your garden spot.  The more colored lines you have on a spot the better.  Pick the best spot you want to start.
  • There are plants you can grow that do well in the shade, like impatients and hostas.
  • in my garden, I have strawberries, concord Grapes, tomatoes, and cucunbers.
